THE FISHING NEWS - SEPTEMBER 2021

The themes of 2021 fish supplies have been plentiful catches of large cod and poor haddock supplies throughout the year. At this time of year the scientists responsible for setting fishing quotas by species in Iceland confirm total allowable catches for the coming year. The Barents Sea quota year runs from January to December and will be confirmed in the next few months.

Iceland has decided to cut its Cod quota for 2021/2022 by 13%. Surprisingly the Icelandic Haddock quota has been marginally increased for next year although Haddock catching has been poor this year.

In the Barents Sea, a cut of around 15% to Cod quota for 2022 is anticipated and it is believed the Barents Sea Haddock quota will be cut by up to 20%. The final decisions will be made in October. The catchers have not caught their Haddock quotas this year and the bulk of the Haddock catch in the Barents Sea has been small (3-5oz). The Barents Sea is by far the largest Haddock fishery.

Demand for Cod and Haddock fillets remains extremely strong both in the UK and internationally.

Despite all challenges to supply, Whitley’s has been able to offer a comprehensive range of the finest frozen at sea skinless pinbone in and skinless boneless Cod fillets throughout 2021 and we are confident that will remain the case going forward into 2022. Our key suppliers such as Rammi, Glacialis and Icefresh have produced consistently high quality products throughout the year. The availability of Haddock fillets has been much more challenging for the whole supply chain. Supplies remain patchy for our whole industry and are not expected to improve greatly in the near future.

We are committed to offering you the best available range of frozen at sea fillets for your businesses at competitive prices despite all the challenges that Brexit, Covid and the logistical infrastructure have presented! Thank you to our many customers who rely on Whitley’s week in week out for vital supplies.

We are dedicated to offering you the Best of the Best!
