The Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative
The Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative was created to advocate for sustainable palm oil.
Traditionally, palm oil has had negative connotations and with good reason. Irresponsibly sourced palm oil has led to the destruction of wildlife habitats, animal displacement, and human exploitation.
Many conservation organisations alongside the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) emphasise that completely boycotting the use of palm oil is unsustainable. The only way forward is to only use sustainable palm oil.
Given palm oil's widespread use, boycotting the use of palm oil would require switching to other oils, simply shifting the environmental impact elsewhere. Producing these alternative oils, such as sunflower or rapeseed, on the same scale as we do palm oil would actually require more land to produce the equivalent amount of palm oil.
The use of Sustainable palm oil helps to halt deforestation and protect wildlife and the environment.
The Sustainable Palm Oil Community
If you don't fall within one of the sustainable palm oil communities, you can use your voice to promote sustainable palm oil as a local ambassador. The movement for sustainable palm oil is incredibly important as it protects wildlife whilst supporting the livelihoods of farmers and local communities.
V.A.Whitley as a National Ambassador for Sustainable Palm Oil
Ourselves, Henry Colbeck and Friars Pride (as The Q Partnership), are proud to be part of Chester Zoo’s Sustainable Palm Oil Project as Sustainable Palm Oil Ambassadors. This role allows us to continue our advocacy for sustainable palm oil through customer and sector engagement, helping to protect wildlife around the world from the impact of unsustainable agricultural practices.
All of the palm oil we sell at V.A.Whitley is RSPO certified from fully segregated sources. This ensures that all our palm oil is traceable back to the mill and plantations and is deforestation-free.
As suppliers to the fish and chip industry, we are conscious that palm oil is one of the most popular frying mediums used by our customers. This is why a commitment to sustainable palm oil useage is so critical for the longevity of our industry.
The Ambassador Role
By becoming an ambassador, we have a great opportunity to give back, especially considering the fish and chip shops are such significant users of palm oil.
- Spread awareness of the Chester Zoo Sustainable Palm Oil Communities Project and increase demand for sustainable palm oil across UK.
