To Market or to Not Market - Can you really afford not to?

To Market or to Not Market - Can you really afford not to?

A recent visit to Mark at Henry Street Fish & Chips, in Accrington, led to a very interesting conversation about the marketing that he does. Mark is in his 7th year of owning and running Henry Street Fish and Chips and says that marketing is the key to its success.

Mark sponsors his son, Harry, who is a race-winning jockey and, as part of this, the ‘Henry Street Fish and Chips’ logo appears on his sons riding breeches. This is a great advert not only for Mark’s shop, but also Fish and Chips in general.

The logo is easily recognisable when his son races - he appears on Sky Sports and ITV regularly. Speaking to Mark, he could not emphasise enough the need for Fish and Chip shops to market themselves and also to compete with ‘the Big Boys’ for a share of the Lunch Time Trade. The ‘Mighty Marketing Machines’, such as McDonalds, Subway and Greggs, market everything that they do - specials, healthier options, family deals - FISH AND CHIP SHOPS HAVE TO DO THE SAME!!

As well as sponsoring his son and having the shop’s logo printing on his uniform, Mark also suggested that shops ‘look local’ for Sponsoring Opportunities. He said to ‘look local’ - have you any local sports teams, local groups or events dance teams that you could sponsor? It is all about getting the name of your business seen by the people who would be your customers - as well as getting your businesses name visually out there. This can also generate local press interest and free positive publicity.

Advertising Space

Mark sees his shop window as his ‘paid space’ to advertise – and he uses bright, eye-catching offer boards to show the passing public what he is offering - and to look at his shop front - it works!

Word of Mouth

Speak to your customers, a tried and tested method of marketing. Good reviews and ‘getting along’ with your customers is what Mark believes is the most powerful way of keeping in touch with what your customers like and want.

And Not Forgetting…
