Spot the 'Super Greens'!

Spot the 'Super Greens'!

Despite the ravages of that long, cold wet Winter with the result that crops were sown around four weeks later than normal our peas eventually got off to a fantastic start! All looked set for a great crop but in June, July and thus far in August, Eastern England received absolutely no rain whatsoever. The pea pods did not fill and what peas that were in them did not swell. The photographs I took from the cab of one of the combine harvesters clearly show the parched crop and the small quantity of pea pods!

Instead of yields of over 2 tonnes per acre our Farmers will be lucky to harvest over 1 tonne this year. When they can plant crops that yield around 4 tonnes per acre in a poor year you can understand that prices paid have to make it worth their while to grow peas!

It is fortunate that a 12.5kg bag of Marrowfats yields around 280 x 4oz portions or 160 x 7oz portions for you!

Peas are going to be on the small side this year, but we will secure Super Greens with a good colour and taste and keep you ‘mushing’ (which is so much easier to achieve with one of our Hawkins ‘Big Boys’!!).
